A 7-day safari which starts and finishes in Kampala.

This safari starts with Kibale Forest which has 13 species of primates including the chimpanzee, the vervet monkey and the red colobus. Tracking the the fast moving and elsuive chimpanzee families racing through this verdant forest is a thrilling experience.

Other highlights include viewing the great game of Africa in the magnificent Queen Elizabeth National Park, and tracking 1 of the 3 habituated gorilla families in the primeval forest of Bwindi. You also track chimpanzees in the Kyambura Gorge, try to spot tree-climbing lions, and enjoy nature walks in search of a variety of birds, monkeys, butterflies and beautiful orchids.

Day 1: Kibale

Start for Fort Portal, via the town of Mubende, set in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains - widely known as the 'Mountains of the Moon'. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route, then continue to Kibale Forest. You arrive in the late afternoon and have the choice of relaxing at the lodge or exploring a nearby crater lake.

Day 2: Kibale

Track the noisy chimps and other primates crashing around through the high canopy of the forest, with colourful birds squawking nearby. After a packed lunch in the forest, you set off on an afternoon walk in the nearby Bigodi Wetland to see swamp birds. The tourism and conservation activities in Bigodi wetland have helped build a number of community projects including a local library and a new secondary school.

Day 3: Queen Elizabeth National Park

You can start your day with a walk in the foothills of the Rwenzoris, one of the great mountain ranges of the world, or drive straight to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The game drives in the park depend on the season: the Kasenyi Plains support large concentrations of game especially lion, the area around the 7 crater lakes in the northern hills is very scenic but game viewing is erratic, while the Mweya Peninsula is usually good for viewing large mammals, buck, elephant, and the unusual giant forest hog. Leopard may also be seen in this area.

Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Today you go on an excursion to nearby Kyambura Gorge to track elusive chimpanzees, one of man's closest relations. The chimp population is quite mobile and viewing is unpredictable, however, the walk in this "lost world" is nevertheless enchanting. Alternatively go for a nature walk in Maramagambo Forest which harbours some unusual species - red-tailed and L'Hoest's Monkey, potto, giant forest hog, pygmy antelope, and giant elephant shrew. You can also visit the bat caves and the blue lake.

In the afternoon you can enjoy a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel which is especially rewarding for viewing a variety of game, especially hippo, buffalo, elephant and a vast array of birds.

Day 5: Bwindi National Park

In the morning you journey to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Your journey takes you via Ishasha, home of the tree climbing lion, (roads permitting) or on the alternative route through cultivated expanses. Time permitting you can round off your day with a guided nature walk in the thick forest rich in birds, butterflies and primates.

Day 6: Bwindi National Park

Today you have the exciting opportunity of going in search of some of the few remaining mountian gorillas (subject to permit availability at time of booking). Walking up steep, densely forested hills, you almost have to cut your way through the undergrowth, but finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation is an inspiring moment. Tracking in Bwindi requires stamina a high level of fitness and can often take most of the day.

Alternatively go for a leisurely walk on one of the trails that meanders through the Impenetrable Forest.

Day 7: Kampala

You have an early start for Kampala, retracing your steps through this green and pleasant land. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route before arriving back at your final destination, Kampala, in the late afternoon.
